A blend of older Pommard and Wadensvil clones planted in 1983 on a lyre trellis. Usually harvested last, the Marcile Lorraine grapes are partially destemmed and then fermented in 600 gallon open top French oak fermenters. The wine possesses a fruity fruit forward style ready to drink.Red Hill Vineyard is a highly maintained vineyard operation, totaling 172 acres of hillside vineyard, situated on Red Hill in Northern Douglas County, Oregon. A seven acre vineyard was originally established in 1970 with plantings of Pinot Noir. Additional plantings were started in 1990. The Vineyard is located with the recently designated AVA Red Hill of Douglas County, Oregon. This is a single vineyard appellation having south and southwest slopes with elevations between 880-1175 feet. This combination of the above factors allows for warm days and cool nights which are ideal for premium wine production. The Red Hill's geology is an elongated volcanic dome with a reservoir of residual Jory soils to depths of 20 feet. Jory loam, Oregon's premier vineyard soil is well drained but quite infertile, resulting in small berry clusters with intense, ripe fruit flavors, displaying the uniqueness of the Red Hill AVA.   • Ridge, Monte Bello 1999 -- May/June 00 "Very saturated ruby. Captivating aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, grilled nuts, fresh herbs and flowers. Great density and sweetness; this wine's uncanny depth of flavor already suggests this will be a top Monte Bello vintage. Really remarkably full for a wine with 12.7% alcohol: this is routinely done by Chateau Latour in riper years but it's hard to imagine a North Coast cabernet pulling this off. Lovely acids brighten the wine's black fruit and floral flavors and contribute to the impression of firm structure.   • Saggi (Longshadows), Columbia Valley 2006 -- Wine Advocate # 185Oct 2009 Jay Miller 92 Drink: 2012 - 2021 $37-$43 (45) The 2006 Saggi is made by Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari of the well-known Tuscan family whose winemaking history dates back to the late 1700s. The wine is made up of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Sangiovese, and 19% Syrah sourced and blended from several AVAs. It was aged for 19 months in 60% new French oak. This purple-colored wine offers aromas of pain grille, spice box, earth notes, cassis, and cherry. Smooth-textured, layered, and ripe, this well-balanced, elegant effort has ample savory fruit, excellent depth and concentration, and a lengthy finish. It should be in its prime from 2012 to 2021. For the third straight year, every wine in this portfolio has achieved an outstanding rating. For this, the credit goes to Alan Shoup who put it all together and Gilles Nicault who handles the winemaking on a day-to-day basis. Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, former longtime CEO of Stimson Lane. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each "?is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a 'best of type' that reflects the winemaker's signature style."

A nicely balanced blend of Pommard and Wadenswil clones.  About 33% new French oak.  Less than 100 cases available."   • Shea Vineyards Variety Six-Pack -- Shea Vineyard, located in Oregon's Yamhill-Carlton district, is arguably Oregon's most famous vineyard.  By Oregon standards, Dick and Deirdre Shea's 200 acre vineyard is a large one and for many winemakers it has become the wine that people measure them by, if they are well enough connected to get any grapes from Dick.  For years, we have been putting together sampler cases for customers of different pinots made from Shea Vineyard grapes.  So we thought we'd put together a regular six-pack of Sheas from various vintages that people can order.  It is great fun, especially in a blind tasting, and very educational to see how different winemakers treat the same grapes.  The current selections are: Shea Wine Cellars:  Pinot Noir - Estate 2010 (Made by Dick Shea himself) Penner-Ash:  Pinot Noir - Shea Vineyard 2010 (Made by Lynn Penner-Ash) Broadley Vineyards:  Pinot Noir - Shea Vineyard 2006 (Made by Craig & Morgan Broadley) Bergström Wines:  Pinot Noir - Shea Vineyard 2011 (Made by Josh Bergström) J.K.   • Spring Valley Vineyard, Frederick - Estate Grown 2006 -- Wine Advocate # 185Oct 2009 Jay Miller 90 Drink: 2012 - 2026 $59 (50) The 2006 Frederick Cabernet Sauvignon Blend is made up of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. It spent 21 months in French oak, 54% new. A saturated purple color, it displays an aromatic array of balsam wood, cinnamon, allspice, violets, black currant, and blackberry. On the palate this full-bodied, large-scaled wine is more structured but less polished than the Uriah cuvee. It has plenty of ripe fruit, good balance, and 2-3 years of aging potential. This lengthy effort will drink well from 2012 to 2026. Spring Valley Vineyard produces wine from 100% estate-grown fruit, a relative rarity in Washington. The winery is owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates but the Derby family from whom they purchased the brand continues to own the vineyards.

  • Spring Valley Vineyard, Syrah - Nina Lee, Walla Walla Valley 2006 -- Wine Advocate # 185Oct 2009 Jay Miller 89+ Drink: N/A $50 (50) The 2006 Nina Lee Syrah (100%) spent 21 months in 48% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it exhibits a perfume of damp earth, underbrush, sage, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate this full-bodied, brooding effort is currently tightly wound and a bit compact as a result. However, it seems to have the balance to evolve for several years, which should permit the wine to reveal its full potential.Spring Valley Vineyard produces wine from 100% estate-grown fruit, a relative rarity in Washington. The winery is owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates but the Derby family from whom they purchased the brand continues to own the vineyards.

  • St. Innocent, Pinot Noir - Zenith Vineyard, Willamette Valley 2006 -- "Ripe red and black fruit flavors with spice and cedar notes and backed up by ripe tannins and moderate acidity. The wine's texture focuses on the mid-tongue with the spice and black fruits extending into the finish. Best enjoyed in its youth, it will develop more complexity over 5 years.Zenith, our estate vineyard, is centrally located in the Eola-Amity Hill AVA eleven miles northwest of Salem, Oregon. The grapes come from Pinot noir 777 clone in block 5C, established in 2002, which has a southwest slope of well-drained silty loam at an average elevation of 280'."Winery Notes"The 2006 Pinot Noir Zenith Vineyard, only in its fourth leaf, is another friendly, easy-to-understand wine with enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years. Drink this lengthy effort from 2010 to 2016. Mark Vlossak, partner/winemaker of St. Innocent Winery, was in a pleasant mood when I saw him in late July of 2008 and why not? He has moved into a splendid new facility where he can take full advantage of his winemaking talents. Round and filled in, with admirably deep pit fruit flavors, a pliant texture and a fresh mineral kick on the finish.   • Wahle, Pinot Noir - Willamette Valley 2007 -- "This wine includes fruit from both our Yamhill Vineyard planted in 1974 as well as the newer Holmes Hill Vineyard.  It successfully combines many of the elegant features of each site.  This blend offers subtle cherry and blackberry aromas leading to a mixed cherry palate." "The Wahle Family began planting Pommard, Wadenswil, and assorted Coury clones on a 100 acre hilltop site outside of Yamhill, Oregon, in 1974. An original 'experimental' block still grows adjacent to this vineyard site today. Mark Wahle completed his Viticulture & Enology studies at UCDavis in 1988. Practical experience was then gained at vineyard and/or winery sites in Germany, California, and Oregon. Mark and his wife, Shaghayegh, discovered a 2nd prime vineyard site in 1999.
